The M-GEAR® helmet cover is an additional functional element designed for protection, camouflage, and expanding the operational capabilities of the helmet. Modern protective gear for the head serves not only as armor but also as an auxiliary platform for mounting important equipment.
Helmet Cover: What It Is and How It Is Used
A helmet cover is an external textile overlay that is put on the helmet shell and securely fixed to it. Covers are made from wear-resistant, heat-resistant fabrics, most often based on high-density nylon (Cordura 500D or similar materials), designed for serious mechanical loads and operation in extreme field conditions. Helmet covers solve several practical tasks at once:
Helmet Cover for Camouflage
This is the basic function of the cover. The helmet itself, even the most modern model, without a textile shell can give off glare, stand out in color and texture against the terrain, and form a characteristic unmasking outline. A helmet cover reduces light reflection, “blurs” the silhouette, and helps adapt the helmet's appearance to the terrain type. For this, camouflage is selected for a specific task: OCP, MULTICAM™, MTP, A-TACS, MM14, MULTICAM Alpine™, and other patterns that allow for maximum blending into the environment.
Helmet Cover for Gear Protection
This textile cover takes on a significant part of mechanical impacts, thereby protecting the helmet shell. The cover extends the service life of the coating and the protective equipment as a whole, reducing wear on the outer layer of the helmet during friction, falls, as well as exposure to dirt, moisture, aggressive environments, and chemicals.
Helmet Covers Ensure Quiet Operation of Head Protective Gear
The cover dampens minor impacts and rustling noises that occur when the helmet contacts branches, walls, etc. In confined spaces, vehicles, or dense vegetation, this significantly reduces the risk of unnecessary sounds, and tactile control when working with the head in cramped conditions becomes more predictable.
Helmet Cover as a Platform for Mounted Equipment
Depending on the specific model, the cover may feature:
- Velcro panels for IR patches, identification marks, markers;
- cutouts and loops for standard NVG mounts, counterweights, cables;
- additional straps or fixation points for flashlights and other accessories.
Due to this, the helmet cover becomes an important part of the equipment system: it simultaneously improves camouflage, protects the helmet, and provides a convenient base for organizing mounted gear without modifying the helmet shell.
What to Look for When Choosing Helmet Covers
This is a full-fledged element of equipment with its own geometry, fastening system, and thoughtful functionality. Helmet covers can be conditionally divided by several key features.
Presence of Mounting Zones and Cutouts for Equipment on the Cover
If the helmet is used in a configuration with NVG, flashlights, action cameras, cables, and other accessories, the design of the helmet cover must take this into account:
- Technological cutouts for NVG mounts, side rails, basic attachment points;
- Holes or pockets for installing a counterweight for night vision devices to compensate for the weight of devices on the front of the helmet.
- Velcro zones for placing IR patches, identifiers, markers.
Compatibility of the Cover with a Specific Helmet
According to this criterion, covers are divided into two classes. The first consists of models for specific helmets designed for certain platforms (FAST, Ops-Core, MICH/ACH, etc.). Such covers take into account the shape and geometry of the dome, the location of fastening elements and rails, ventilation zones, and cutouts for hardware mounting. As a result, such a cover “fits” the helmet as tightly as possible, without unnecessary folds, does not block important elements, and does not shift during active actions.
The second class is the universal helmet cover. These are simpler in shape, designed for helmets of similar size and configuration. They indeed allow covering the helmet shell and improving camouflage, but there are a few nuances:
- they may fit less tightly;
- sometimes they create small folds on the helmet;
- they require more careful, precise adjustment during installation.
This option is suitable in cases where functionality is critical, but there is no strict tie to a specific helmet model.
Structural Features of the Helmet Cover
By coverage area, covers are conditionally divided into two types:
- Full covers. Cover almost the entire outer surface of the helmet, including the crown area, temporal zones, and the back of the head. Most often used in combat configurations where maximum camouflage, protection of the helmet coating, and the presence of an extensive mounting area for patches and equipment are important.
- Partial covers (half cover/top cover). Cover only the upper part of the dome and/or the occipital area. This option is chosen when it is necessary to maintain free access to ARC side rails, as well as not to block standard mounts and helmet elements.
Type of Cover Fastening on the Helmet
The fixation system directly affects the installation speed and reliability of the cover's hold. There are three main types. Velcro fastening attaches to Velcro panels already placed on the helmet. This implementation ensures quick removal/installation of equipment, good fixation (provided there is sufficient Velcro area), and the ability to partially loosen or tighten the cover without removing the helmet. Drawstring or elastic band fastening runs along the perimeter, pressing the cover to the helmet shell. This improves the fit on helmets without a large amount of Velcro and allows compensating for small differences in the geometry of different models. Mixed fixation systems of the cover combine Velcro and elastic elements. Velcro fixes the cover at key points, while elastic bands or straps “tighten” the shape along the dome, removing folds. This solution gives the best balance between quick maintenance and a tight fit of the cover during active movement and work in confined spaces.
