Weapon care is a basic part of its operation. Even the highest quality barrel and functional mechanics quickly lose their lifespan if cleaning and lubrication are not performed on time or correctly. Carbon fouling, powder gas residues, moisture, dust, and untimely care will eventually guarantee accelerated wear of mechanisms, misfires, and reduced accuracy.
Weapon Care Products: Varieties and Purpose
Proper weapon care involves using both mechanical devices and chemical agents – their specific set depends on the type of weapon, caliber, and depth of cleaning required. Nevertheless, there is a basic kit without which full maintenance of the barrel and mechanisms is impossible in principle.
Chemical Agents and Kits for Weapon Care
All products in this category are divided into those that aggressively work on fouling in the barrel and those that protect and lubricate.
Gun Oil
A basic consumable for weapon maintenance. Without it, normal operation of the barrel and moving parts is fundamentally impossible.
Main tasks of gun oil:
- Anti-corrosion protection. Oil forms a thin film on metal surfaces, reducing metal contact with moisture and air, thereby slowing down rust formation.
- Lubrication of friction pairs. The compound penetrates threaded, pinned, axial, and hinged joints, reducing friction in moving mechanisms. This reduces wear during intense shooting and automatic operation.
- Maintenance cleaning. At the final stage, oil helps to “collect” residues of fine dirt particles, powder fouling, and remove them together with patches from the barrel and mechanisms.
The market offers both universal oils designed for most application scenarios and specialized ones – for low temperatures, high humidity, long-term storage, etc. Typically, oil is used at the final stage of maintenance: first, the main cleaning is performed, the barrel and mechanisms are dried, after which all working surfaces are thinly coated with oil until the next use of the weapon.
Weapon Paint
Applying specialized weapon paint is not cosmetics for aesthetics, but a full-fledged protective layer that directly affects the service life and behavior of the weapon in operation. With a properly prepared surface and adherence to painting technology, the coating acts as a strong barrier between the metal and the external environment.
Professionally executed painting allows you to:
- reduce the risk of chips, scuffs, and scratches;
- increase resistance to heat during shooting;
- provide basic protection against moisture and corrosion.
It is also worth considering the fact that in the standard factory version, most small arms models have a black or dark gray finish. From a camouflage point of view, this is far from an optimal option against the background of camouflaged uniforms and gear. Weapon paint can act as an excellent camouflage element. The barrel, handguard, stock, receiver, and other elements can be covered with both solid tactical colors and a camouflage pattern.
Barrel Cleaning Foam
After shooting, combustion products of gunpowder (carbon fouling) and lead, copper deposits from bullets and jackets remain in the bore. If they are not systematically removed, shooting accuracy and stability deteriorate over time, and each subsequent cleaning becomes increasingly difficult and longer.
For such tasks, it is convenient to use barrel cleaning foam. Its key features:
- Deep cleaning. The foam evenly fills the bore, penetrates into micro-irregularities, and helps dissolve residues of gunpowder, lead, and copper. This significantly facilitates subsequent mechanical cleaning.
- Gentle effect when used correctly. Formulas of such agents are developed to actively work with contamination but not damage steel and barrel coating provided instructions are followed.
- Ease of use. The foam is easy to apply, does not run, and after holding, it simply needs to be removed with patches using a cleaning rod, along with dissolved contaminants.
Gun oil and cleaning foam can be used for both rifled and smoothbore weapons. It is important to select compounds taking into account the type of barrel and recommendations of the weapon and chemical manufacturer. At the same time, strictly follow the instructions for use, rather than “keeping it longer for reliability” – exceeding the exposure time is sometimes no less harmful than insufficient cleaning.
Everything for Weapon Cleaning: Basic Kit
In addition to chemical agents, mechanical devices will certainly be required. Cleaning rod – the main tool for working with the bore. It represents a rigid rod onto which various attachments are screwed. It can be one-piece – more rigid and resistant to bending, optimal for stationary maintenance, and sectional – assembled from several parts, convenient for carrying and field use.
A jag can be used as an attachment to which cleaning patches are attached. Jags are made of brass, aluminum, plastic, and other materials that do not damage the bore. A cleaning agent is applied to the patch, after which the jag with the patch is passed through the barrel and along internal surfaces several times, removing carbon fouling and residues of leading/coppering. It is the jag with patches that ensures the final wiping and removal of contaminants after working with a brush and chemicals.
Another soft attachment is a mop. It is usually made of pile or synthetic material and is used not for cleaning, but for applying and evenly distributing lubricant. The mop allows applying a thin layer of gun oil along the entire length of the bore, avoiding excesses in the form of “puddles” while leaving no dry areas.
And the last, hard attachment for the cleaning rod is the bore brush. It is used for mechanical removal of stubborn contaminants: powder fouling, corrosion products, coppering, and leading. The brush can be steel, brass, nylon. The type of brush is selected for the caliber and features of the barrel to effectively clean the channel without damaging the rifling. First, the barrel is carefully “combed” with a brush, breaking down dense deposits, and then finished with patches with chemicals, bringing the inner surface to a clean state.
Separately, it is worth mentioning another element that is often underestimated, but in fact, it greatly affects maintenance convenience – a tray or mat for weapon maintenance. A compact folding tray or specialized mat allows organizing a workplace for cleaning weapons outside the home or shooting range, laying out the disassembled weapon so that small parts are not lost.
