Soft ballistic packages represent a high-tech element of a protection system covering a specific range of threats. Essentially, these are multi-layer panels made of aramid fibers (Kevlar family and analogs) or UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene). In the required configuration, they provide the necessary resistance levels according to NIJ/DSTU standards against fragments and most pistol ammunition with moderate weight and a high level of ergonomics.

M-GEAR® soft ballistic protection: main advantages

Modern packages made of aramids or UHMWPE add tens, not hundreds of grams to the coverage area, so the weight increase to the equipped protection system is practically imperceptible. The thin, flexible multi-layer construction follows the anatomy, does not impair the fit of the armor system, and does not limit the range of motion. The absence of hard edges significantly reduces the risk of chafing and point pressure during prolonged wear.

Moreover, due to their small thickness and mass, soft ballistic packages can be installed not only in chest and back pockets but can cover all critical zones by equipping different types of protective gear with them. Of course, they can be used as a standalone layer or in combination with hard armor plates.

Soft ballistic packages: protection class and characteristics

Soft armor inserts can have two different protection levels.

Level 1 (1A/1/NIJ IIIA)

There are three designations for the same protection level in circulation:

  1. Class 1A – according to DSTU 4103:2002.
  2. Class 1 – according to the new DSTU 8782:2018.
  3. NIJ IIIA – American gradation, comparable in actual resistance to threats of this level.

The construction is multi-layer UHMWPE, which dissipates and absorbs the kinetic energy of the bullet/fragment, minimizing deformation on the back side (backface signature/trauma). These are thin, flexible, inconspicuous inserts that noticeably increase the overall safety level:

  • covered threats: fragmentation (grenades, ricochets), pistol cartridges 9×18 mm PM and 9×19 mm Luger;
  • fragmentation resistance ≈ 600 m/s (±40 m/s).

Soft ballistic protection level 2

Structurally, this is the same UHMWPE, but having a larger number of layers, due to which the mass and thickness increase. However, the inserts remain flexible and suitable for prolonged wear without compromising maneuverability:

  • covered threats: everything covered by Level 1 (including 9×18 and 9×19), plus protection against 7.62×25 mm TT (Steel Core).
  • fragmentation resistance ≈ 758.6 m/s (±40 m/s).

A serious increase in threat penetration capability, but in practice, armor packages with protection class 1 are still used more massively. A number of reasons contribute to this. Yes, Class 2 objectively protects against a more serious threat at the cost of more layers, meaning greater thickness and stiffness. Using such ballistic packages for body armor is quite rational, but for protecting the neck, groin, shoulders, nape, flexible inserts in load-bearing gear, pouches, car seats – not really. Extra millimeters and stiffness can become critical here, and using such a protection system simply becomes uncomfortable.

For what gear can you buy ballistic packages

The model range of these soft armor inserts covers almost all vulnerable zones of a fighter's body. The line includes solutions for different equipment elements.

Ballistic packages for cummerbunds

A plate carrier covers the chest and back, but the side zones of the abdomen remain open. Inserts in the cummerbund solve precisely this problem. They add side protection where the line of damage from fragments and ricochets usually passes.

Soft ballistic packages in a drop pouch (dangler)

The drop pouch stops being just an organizer for documents and small items. With the right protective insert, it turns into an additional protection zone for the lower abdomen and upper pelvic area, simultaneously armoring the contents of the pouch against fragments.

Ballistic packages for LBE (Load-Bearing Equipment) belts

A load-bearing belt with an integrated armor package covers the lower torso in a circle. Such a configuration reduces the risk of being hit by fragments and bullets in the area of the pelvic bones, sides, and lower abdomen. Exactly what often remains a “grey zone” between the plate carrier and the trouser belt.

Soft ballistic packages for the lower back

A classic scenario: a plate in front, a load-bearing belt below, and a “pocket” without protection is formed between them at the back. The lower back insert is created precisely for this gap. It covers the vulnerable zone in the sacrum and lower back area, leveling the protection contour.

Ballistic packages for groin protection

In principle, they are similar to lumbar inserts but work in the opposite plane. Such a package is attached like an apron to the lower part of the plate carrier and covers the groin area (one of the most sensitive and yet often ignored zones) from fragments and bullets.

Soft ballistic packages in a sitting mat

A protective insert in the seat mat is protection against fragments that can fly from below or at a small angle from ricochets. Such a mat protects the buttocks and the back surface of the thighs, which is especially relevant during prolonged stays in position, in vehicles, or in open terrain.

Ballistic packages for knee protection

Ordinary knee pads save from impacts and injuries when moving and shooting from the knee but do not work against fragments. Ballistic inserts in the knee zone are integrated into pants or special pockets and provide anti-fragmentation protection for joints that are constantly close to the ground and the line of ricochets.

Soft ballistic packages for body armor vests

Extended packages for body armor increase the total coverage area and minimize the number of “gaps” between the main plates and soft elements. This allows forming a more integral protection contour without pronounced vulnerable zones along the edges of the plates.

Ballistic nape protection

Separate packages for the occipital zone are attached to helmets or specialized modules. They reduce the risk of being hit by fragments and secondary debris in the back of the head and upper neck – areas that are critical for survival but far from always covered by the standard helmet design.

You can buy ballistic packages at the M-GEAR military store

We provide the opportunity to purchase not only separate soft armor packages of the required format but also ready-made solutions: aprons, cummerbunds, gorgets, and other equipment elements with integrated ballistic protection. If you need additional consultation or help in choosing protective gear, please contact the managers of the M-GEAR military store in any way convenient for you.
