Magazine pouches from M-GEAR® are professional military gear that has proven its effectiveness and practicality on the battlefield. Each model has been refined based on the feedback of frontline soldiers and fully meets the requirements of modern warfare realities.

Magazine pouches: types and operational features

This type of gear can be divided into three groups.

Rifle magazine pouches

Assault rifles with detachable box magazines require mandatory carrying of spare magazines. Formally, there are pouches for six units, but in real use, products with a capacity of 1–4 magazines are optimal.

Open AK/AR magazine pouches

Speed is the main advantage of such models. Nothing interferes with the grip, and the magazine is extracted instantly. The design ensures that the magazine does not fall out during running, jumping, or active maneuvers in various positions. There are two main versions:

  1. Elastic pouch for AK/AR magazines. Soft body, magazine secured by a durable strap and an additional safety bungee cord with a puller. Attachment system – MOLLE.
  2. Reinforced pouches for rifle magazines. Equipped with side inserts made of impact-resistant plastic, while secure retention is adjusted with an elastic cord. Attachment systems – MOLLE, MALICE, BTS/STRIKE. Some models may feature a Velcro panel for additional gear.

Closed AK/AR magazine pouches

The main difference from open models is the presence of a protective flap made of high-strength fabric, covering the magazine and secured with a fastener. This provides better protection against dirt, rain, and accidental loss during active movement. However, the extra protection comes at the cost of slightly slower access to the magazine. Closed rifle pouches may have the following fastening types:

  • Buckle (fastex). Secure fixation, convenient with gloves, resistant to moisture and dirt. Access is slower compared to Velcro;
  • Velcro. Provides fast access and flexible adjustment of flap height, but unlike fastex, Velcro is noisy when opened and loses efficiency when dirty.

Front assault panel for plate carriers with rifle magazines

The panel secures magazines on the front of the plate carrier, providing quick access. Most often, the cells are designed as open elastic pouches:

  • soft body without rigid inserts;
  • primary retention achieved through durable fabric (Cordura 500D/1000D, Squadron, etc.);
  • extra safety against magazine loss ensured with a paracord bungee cord with a puller.

Attachment to the plate carrier is at two points: quick-release WJ buckles plus a front Velcro panel for secure fit and fast module replacement.

Some models are equipped with side elastics for carrying chem-lights, markers, and other small gear.

Pistol magazine pouches

Pistol pouches are available in two basic options.

  1. Single pistol magazine pouch – designed for one magazine, featuring minimal dimensions.
  2. Double pistol magazine pouch – has two separate compartments for carrying magazines or other similarly sized items.

Regardless of form factor, pouches differ in ease of access to contents: the specific choice depends on tasks and operating conditions, with each type having its strengths and limitations.

Open pistol magazine pouch

In classic open designs, the magazine is positioned for maximum speed of extraction. A removable top flap improves retention, but can be folded back for unrestricted access when needed. Two design variants are possible:

  • Elastic sleeve with rubber retainers. The body is made of durable, wear-resistant fabrics (e.g., Cordura 500D/1000D, Squadron), with the magazine pocket crafted from a wide elastic band;
  • Webbing + adjustable bungee cord. Side inserts of impact-resistant plastic stabilize the pocket’s shape, while a thin elastic cord allows retention tension adjustment.

Modular insert for pistol magazines

Mounted with Velcro, unlike the above MOLLE-attached models. The design lacks top and bottom straps: retention is provided by an elastic cord with adjustable tension for different load sizes. The magazine is held securely while remaining quickly accessible.

Pouches for machine gun ammo boxes/belts

Despite the variety of models, they are more logically divided into two simple formats:

  1. Closed pouches for MG belts.  Designed for maximum protection of the box from dust and moisture. MOLLE attachment ensures secure fixation, while the flap provides fairly quick access to ammunition. Ideal for prolonged, less dynamic tasks where ammo preservation is a priority.
  2. Open pouches for MG boxes. These prioritize instant access to ammo over protection. The platform attaches to gear via MOLLE, while straps, Velcro, and buckles securely hold the box, allowing one-handed extraction. Protection is lower than with closed models, but reload speed is maximal. Best for dynamic operations when every second counts.
