The M-GEAR® demi-season SoftShell jacket combines wind protection, water repellency, and microclimate control in a single garment, ensuring stable thermal comfort during the transitional seasons. It is worth noting that the performance characteristics of this outerwear can provide wearing comfort and protection against various weather conditions not only in the autumn-spring period but also in winter and summer.
How a SoftShell Jacket Differs from Regular Demi-Season Jackets
SoftShell itself is not just another type of fabric, but a technological concept in which several layers of material work as a unified system. In practice, it looks like this:
- 100% wind protection. The fabric completely blocks wind gusts and is windproof;
- water-repellent properties. Precipitation in the form of light rain and snow does not seep inside;
- presence of a membrane. An additional membrane layer blocks water/moisture even under heavy precipitation, keeping the interior dry.
In addition to the aforementioned advantages, the SoftShell jacket is lightweight and compact, does not restrict movement, preserving complete freedom of action. Another important factor is the excellent breathability of the item – the fabric “breathes” and wicks away excess moisture during intense physical exertion.
Regarding general functionality, you can buy a SoftShell jacket in a simple design (a pair of outer pockets and one inner pocket, a hood) or in a more complex one:
- side, chest, inner, and shoulder pockets, as well as additional compartments on the forearm;
- reinforcements with durable fabric in high-wear zones;
- adjustable Velcro cuffs;
- waterproof and windproof central zipper;
- elastic cord in the waist zone;
hood – regular sewn-in or implemented with the ability to hide in a stand-up collar.
Depending on the model, a tactical SoftShell jacket may have underarm ventilation vents that zip up, allowing for even more flexible temperature regulation under clothing during active operations.
Which Tactical SoftShell Jacket is Better: With Insulation, With a Membrane, or With Basic Wind/Moisture Protection
This type of outerwear can easily fit into almost any usage scenario – from everyday wear to outdoor activities, tactical exercises, etc. For a SoftShell jacket to fully reveal its potential, one should choose a model based on specific operating conditions. Three varieties of this clothing can be distinguished.
Uninsulated SoftShell Jacket
Represents a light, thin, single-layer shell with full wind protection and basic water-repellent ability. It is important to understand that in this case, there is absolutely no thermal insulation, and thermal properties are out of the question. This option does not belong to the mass civilian choice, as in the off-season, a very well-insulated layer of clothing will need to be worn underneath. However, among tourists, paramilitary, and law enforcement structures, the uninsulated SoftShell jacket is very popular. Why?
During intense physical exertion, insulated versions of jackets often lead to body overheating, and naturally, it is impossible to get rid of the sewn-in insulation. Uninsulated SoftShell provides the opportunity for flexible thermoregulation and quick achievement of the required comfort temperature through layering. The simplest implementation scenario: during active work – Level 1 thermal underwear + SoftShell jacket; during cooling or decreased physical activity – Level 2 thermal underwear is added.
Thus, an uninsulated SoftShell jacket is an ideal option for those who spend most of their time in field conditions and is not particularly suitable for ordinary everyday wear.
Insulated SoftShell Jacket
Such outerwear has two layers. The outer layer is windproof and water-repellent (holds back gusty wind, short-term rain, and wet snow). The inner layer is insulating, most often made of fleece/microfleece (soft to the body, dries quickly, warms without adding excess volume to the clothing).
How a SoftShell jacket is used in practice:
- Unlike the version without a warming layer, such a jacket can be worn directly over a t-shirt in cool demi-season weather (without a mandatory warm base).
- It is a rational choice for everyday wear. Stable temperature comfort, minimal weight, and convenience.
- This format is also in demand by law enforcement units working in urban conditions, where the weather is more predictable than in the field. Lower risk of overheating/hypothermia during patrol activity, duties, moving between indoors and outdoors, etc.
Tactical SoftShell Jacket with Insulation and Membrane
This is a three-layer version – the most advanced. The outer layer offers wind protection and basic water repellency, the inner insulating layer provides comfort and warmth without excessive volume, and the membrane is a barrier that significantly increases moisture protection. In practice, the membrane version confidently withstands intense rain and wet snow without letting water through to the inner layers, while maintaining wind protection and adequate vapor permeability for active wear modes.
There are also SoftShell jackets with a removable insulating liner. Despite the fact that such a “two-in-one” item seems very practical, in the professional environment, it is preferred to have separate jackets with basic wind/moisture protection and an insulating layer with a membrane.
