Description of the Fenix PD40R V3.0 hand-held flashlight:

The PD40R V3.0 flashlight — it is an improved version of the V2.0 model, which boasts an almost quarter-increased light range up to 500 meters and the presence of another auxiliary SOS mode in addition to the usual strobe.

This hand-held model is a bright representative of the third generation of Fenix flashlights with improved light performance and small improvements that increase the convenience of operation. The changes affected, among others, the built-in LED — the V3.0 version of the flashlight uses the Luminus SFT70 diode, which generates a longer-range beam with a color temperature of 6500K. The LED lasts for at least 50 thousand hours, which is equivalent to 5.7 years.

Operating modes

Available modes can be conventionally divided into two groups: options with constant light brightness from 30 to 3000 lumens and flashing SOS and strobe modes.

Turbo: 3000 lumens – 60 954 candelas - 500 meters - 2 hours 40 minutes;
High: 1000 lumens - 22,648 candelas - 300 meters - 3 hours 10 minutes;
Medium: 350 lumens - 7684 candelas - 175 meters - 8 hours 30 minutes;
Low: 30 lumens – 612 candelas – 50 meters – 89 hours;
SOS: 350 lumens;
Stroboscope: 3000 lumens.

When using the Turbo mode, it should be noted that the indicated duration of the glow is calculated in the amount with work on smaller brightnesses, which are activated in the event of activation of protection against overheating. This option avoids excessive overheating of the internal electronics due to the accumulation of heat when working at the maximum power.

When the temperature of the electronics drops to an acceptable value, the user can activate the brightest mode again.

Control features

Fenix PD40R V3.0 control is implemented using a mechanical rotary switch.

The step-by-step rotation of the ring allows alternately change the available operating modes.

Power source

One Li-ion battery of the popular size 21700 is suitable for powering the flashlight. This type of power source can be found in the basic configuration — this is a proprietary ARB-L21-5000 V2.0 battery designed specifically for powering electronics with high power consumption (Fenix's ARB-L21-5000 battery is not suitable for powering the PD40R V3.0 as the flashlight's operating current exceeds 14A). The working voltage of the model ranges from 2.8 V to 4.2 V.

The manufacturer equipped the model with a waterproof USB Type-C charging port, so the lantern can be charged away from home using a portable Power Bank. A USB charging cable is included. Charging takes about 3 hours.

Physical parameters

The body is made of durable aluminum A6061-T6, rust-resistant and scratch-resistant thanks to premium HAIII anodization. The metal structure is machined on high-precision CNC machines.

In the head of the housing, under the rotary switch, there are multiple deep ribs for efficient cooling of the LED when operating at the brightest modes.

Fenix PD40R V3.0 is protected against debris and water according to the highest IP68 standard. The flashlight can be used in any weather, regardless of the level of humidity. The permissible air temperature for operation is -35°C - 45°C. In addition, as a result of complete tightness, the electronics remain functional even if the model falls into water, and the impact resistance of the structure is equal to 1.5 meters.

The dimensions of the lantern body are 143 x 34 x 26 millimeters. It can be carried in the pocket of clothes, stored in a case with a belt loop or attached to ammunition with the help of a clip. The weight of the structure is 198 grams.

The design of the model with a flat tail allows the user to install the lighting device in a vertical position. The flashlight is compatible with such branded accessories as the Fenix AOD-M diffusion filter, which diffuses the light, and the Fenix AOF-M red light filter.
